Mike McKenzie is from the Secwepemc Nation, where Mike’s dad has been a band councillor and leader for over 30 years. Mike has been a youth representative and member of the council at the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, was elected National Youth Representative and National Director at the National Association of Friendship Centers, advocated for an inquiry regarding MMIWG, co-created one of the first ever indigenous environmental assessment processes in the world and the BC Aboriginal Youth Workers Network, was one of the youngest fire chiefs in Canada, and ran to be mayor of Kamloops.
Mike has a responsibility to the land and to Mike’s elders. Mike has performed rites and rituals all of Mike’s life to become a leader among Mike’s community. Mike is two spirited and is married to the matriarch in Mike’s life.
